Since Joanne mentioned Love That Dog by Sharon Creech, I'd like to share a
unit I do with the book. I read it aloud over the course of several weeks,
then have the students "be like Jack" in that they each write a shape poem,
revise, etc., and put the good copy on colored paper. Later, they write a
"Love that _____" in the manner of Walter Dean Myers. I word processed a
format sheet that the students use. This is a fun way to engage students in
poetry, even those who, like Jack, are sure they can't (or shouldn't) write
poems.
