I am very proud to be part of the newly revamped SLJ site at
www.schoollibraryjournal.com Joining the fabulous Amy Bowllan are
SLJ editor Brian Kinney, Christopher Harris, and me. The SLJ blog is
a paid gig, but my deepthinking.blogsome.com continues to be my
rabble-rousing arena. Please go check out all the blogs at SLJ and
note the new content. At school today another librarian was visiting
and we began discussing how fun activities can become IPA's Income
Producing Activities.

Two years ago I attended a professional development workshop that I
saw no practical use for. It focused on how academic libraries were
using new technologies to communicate with their students. They
showcased IM'ing, real-time chat sessions, and this blogging phenom.
I went home and began playing with a blog for my professional
association. Six months later I decided I had a great deal more to
write about and didn't want to represent anyone else, so I began my
deepthinking blog. As I met with librarians around the country, I
discovered that a wide variety of people were finding interesting
content in my writing - even though it wasn't aimed at them. Now I
have found a way to actually earn money on the side while doing
something I enjoy.

How many times has this happened in your past? What technology or
professional development activity have you invested time in without
an obvious practical use then found out it was vital to your
professional growth in the long run.
