Here is our situation:
Our school is contemplating (this did not originate with me) adding a
section of computers to our library. They would be put in a seating
section resulting in that area of tables becoming computer tables
instead of study tables. There would be table seating for about 36
people (4 per table) left. The other tables will all have computers on
them. As it is now, I can accommodate a class plus a few extra on
computers, a class using tables only and a section of about 36 students
without a class (we have a lot of students who use schedule "holes' to
study here.) There are two staff members here all day - me and one
assistant. Our student body numbers 1800 give or take. We are an IB
school.
What do you see as my challenges if we go to such a configuration? I see
staffing, computer "players", more maintenance problems, less room for
quiet study-ers, extra heat (we are having excess heat problems
already).
What do you see as advantages? I see more available computers to meet
student demand, fewer table sitters who are avoiding class (but they
will probably morph into the above "players").
I have a feeling this will come about whether I am a supporter or not.
What shall I insist on? Any advice?
