I used to teach sixth grade and used the Book-It program in a very positive way.  
The parents had nothing to sign as I simply required a set number of Accelerated 
Reader points.  I did not give the coupon to the student.  Instead, I saved all the 
coupons and we celebrated together as a class.  The day before our planned 
celebration, I called the order in to Pizza Hut for each child's requested 
one-topping pizza.  I was always fortunate to have a mother willing to go to the 
Pizza Hut to pick up the 25 - 30 personal pan pizzas.  Often the parent would send 
a dessert to add to our celebration.  Pizza Hut even sent the pizzas in their 
insulated warming bags.  The local PH was more than willing to let any teachers at 
our school who were interested run their classroom Book-It program this way.  We 
got to celebrate our classroom reading successes every month together and share 
books that had been read.  I took pictures each month and sent them to Pizza Hut as 
a thank-you.  It's been so many years ago, and yet I still have such fond memories 
of our monthly "luncheons."
