Maybe an option that we should ask for from some of the corporate
sponsors is that rather than rewarding students with prizes like
pizza, coke, snacks, chips, toys, or movies, that they provide
incentives that include financial funding to the school's library for
the purchase of NEW books for the students--- without any major
billboards blinking in the library.....just books silently waiting to
be checked out and "devoured."
If Stephen Krashen (and others) report that the only thing needed to
get students to read is a great supply of good books, then surely
someone will figure out that many students need access to good books
in their homes and their school libraries in order to become those
future citizens who are successful, educated, and who make good money,
which provides them with the ability to ultimately be ABLE to purchase
those food items for enjoyment, rather than as a reward for reading.
