Tony,
Wow, you brought back great old memories of how I first learned to do
inventory when I was a library para. You are right, we knew our collection
intimately when we finished and we weeded as we went. I have not done a full
inventory in two years and my inventory scanner is old. I usually do one or
two sections( fiction or easy etc.)by shelf list but I have a very small
library with a small collection. There is a newer wireless scanner I hope to
purchase this year called In-Hands for Sagebrush and Athena that is supposed
to be user friendly. Thanks for reminding us that inventory helps us know
our collection well and that is a good thing when ordering new books with
many other administrative duties. In fact I think I will go to my library
sometime this summer to finish my collection. I am given one week without
students at the end as I am teacher planning time, and have had to finish
the yearbook during that time. Next year someone else will take that over
and I will just assist them. Thank goodness I don't have to turn my
inventory in to anyone.
In response to school schedules we go back Aug 6 our students Aug
8th and the last day for students will be May 29th. Teachers May 30th. We
ended this year May 24th for students May 25th for teachers. Our students
statewide must attend 180 days. We have a new 3 day fall break in Oct this
year, one week for Thanksgiving, about 10 days for Christmas, MLK day, one
week for Mardi Gras in Feb., and one week for Easter. I love South
Louisiana! We celebrate everything. One drawback if we have a H---icane( I
can't say it too loud since our season has begun) all those great days off
go bye-bye and we go back to the scheduling drawing board.
Check out our district's web page.

P.S. I still have my old card catalog and cards unused since about 2000. I
just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I use the top for files and
supplies. Anyone else that nostalgic?

Subject: Re: HIT: Inventory
Michelle, it used to be mandatory that we had to do inventory and turn our
results into our coordinator to keep on file at the central office. This
was
back when we had State Standards and were held accountable for things. We
did
not leave for the summer until that inventory was done and turned int.
Inventory is a headache, but a necessary headache in my opinion.
Since we automated in the mid-1990's, inventory does not take anywhere near
as long as it did back in the "good ole days." When I first started back in
1989-90, we would do inventory by taking our shelf-list cards and going
through
each section of books at a time...like non-fiction, easy, fiction,
reference,
etc. If a book was missing from the shelf, we put a paperclip on the card
designating that it was missing that year. If the book showed up, the clip
was
removed...but if a book was missing from the shelf for three inventories
(the
shelf-list card would have 3 clips), then we pulled the shelf-list card and
that book was considered lost for good. Then we had to go to the card
catalog
and pull all cards relating to that specific book. This was an extremely
time-consuming task...but from those years of doing inventory is how I knew
my
collection the best...even today. While I have weeded a lot since those
days, I
can recall many books from having to handle each one the way we did back in
the
early stages. Those days of inventory required that I physically touch each
book, took it off the shelf, glanced at the CR or content, etc.
Since we automated in the mid-1990's, the time spent with this task has been
cut tremendously...but I'm able to get several great reports I use to give
to
my administrator and include whenever I give a report. Circulation
statistics, number of materials missing or lost each year (primarily by
teachers and not
kids), etc. are good to have to support you if you must prove a point or
supply data on your materials.
Best wishes,
