My public library uses the Dewey Decimal shelving scheme for nonfiction but shelves
fiction by the author's last name.
For some odd reason, we also interfile the Mc's and Mac's
So, McDaniel & McDonald will be shelved BEFORE Matas & Maxler, which makes books
much more difficult to find.
If we shelve nonfiction by Dewey number going one digit at a time, then how does
this interfiling of the Mc's and Mac's make sense?
It doesn't! I have had patrons complain too. I dread having to go to the
beginning M's to find anything as this always throws me off. I've been talking to
the other librarians and they don't like it either, but this is how "it's always
been done."
I guess the pages find it easier. It wouldn't be so bad if they even did the
incorrect thing correctly, but the Mc's and Mac's are ALWAYS a mess.
I know that most schools also use Dewey. Does anyone else interfile the Mc's and
Mac's?
Please respond to me privately.
