Here are 2 more good ideas that just came through as I was writing the first
HIT:

 

This also happened to me while using Athena.  I called customer support and
they sent me a set of barcodes that reprogram the scanner for you.  It was a
series of about 10 barcodes and by actually scanning them in the proper
sequence, the scanner was reset.  It worked like magic.  No problem since
then.

 

 

That happens to me periodically and I just have to unplug it from its USB
port on the back of the computer, plug it back in so the computer
re-recognizes it and then I'm OK...you might also try restarting the
computer for a complete "re-start"
