Late last week I posted a TARGET in which I asked people if they still
considered email a "killer app," an application that was irreplaceable in
their lives. Then I enjoyed the resulting email about email as many friends
and colleagues responded! The response was overwhelmingly positive. Reasons
were:
- It comes to you rather than you having to go to it, as with a blog,
MySpace page, etc.
- It can be archived easily, unlike IM or texting
- It allows one to edit, think through responses, and carefully
compose rather than quickly dash off comments.
- It can be tagged, organized in folders, and otherwise saved for
future reference.
- It is something that just about everybody knows how to use.
- It is great for keeping up with relatives, distant friends, etc. who
may not be "into" other modes of communications.
These were some of the most common attributes that people still like about
email. I agree, and think that all the different ways of communicate that we
presently enjoy occupy different niches in needs and none will supplant the
other in the near future. I really thank everyone for your comments, and for
affirming what I did think was the case.
Thanks again, mabell
