Enthusiastically, yes!!
I learned through experience that having "outside" people in to talk with, read
to, demonstrate for, or any activity that I might otherwise do in my library
program is ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!!
It doesn't take much effort to work with public librarians, and my community is
blessed with very talented professionals for both Children's and Teen's work.
These guests are models and connections to the community. I don't care if they
seem to do something I already do with students. These are different people and
they bring a different experience into my school.
It is easy, cheap and always fun when I work with my local public librarians.

Many public librarians contact media specialists regarding setting up visits at
their schools so they can come read or provide some other kind of program. In fact,
it is written in the job descriptions of most of the public librarians that they
MUST visit their area schools 1-3 times a year! However, I have read some postings
in the past that reflected some media specialists don't want to be bothered by
public librarians because they aren't offering anything they aren't already doing.
My questions are these: Do you as a media specialist want to work with your public
librarian? and if so, what kinds of things would you like the public librarian to
offer as a service? Is is part of the school librarian's job description to work
with their local public children's librarian?
