Thanks to all who responded to my request for advice regarding the purchase of
library furniture.
Brodart, Highsmith and Library Bureau (Herkimer, NY) were recommended as reliable
firms from which to purchase. Many wrote to suggest Sauder Manufacturing Co. (930
W. Barre Road, Archbold, OH 43502 800-537-1530 http://www.saudermfg.com) for
their ingenious 3 position chair, called the Troika, which comes with a 10 year
warranty. One person suggested local cabinet makers as a satisfactory option. Tesco
was mentioned by one respondent as a company to avoid at all cost.
Regarding furniture styles, many wrote to recommend 2 or 3 position chairs
(comfortable and safe), as well as sled base (sturdy and easy to push on carpet).
Standard 4 leg chairs are less desirable. Upholstery is attractive and adds
comfort, however wear and tear as well as vandalism can be a problem. Upholstered
chair backs (only) seem to be a good compromise. A mix of round and rectangular or
square tables is functional. Round tables can be ordered with pedestal bases for
more flexibility in seating.
Several correspondents emphasized the need to double check all the details on bids
- companies often make mistakes and if the buyer doesn't catch them, corrections
can be expensive or impossible. Remember to measure, measure, measure, to be sure
everything will fit into your space. Pay careful attention to the height of your
tables and chairs. There are adult as well as children's sizes available and you
must choose carefully to be sure your tables and chairs match and fit your patrons
properly.
FYI - I decided to go with Brodart's Classic line of rectangular and round tables
with 2 position chairs to match. Their product sounds superior (solid wood
construction, thicker laminate on table surfaces, 5 year warranty on all
furniture), their reputation is reliable, their furniture consultants are
responsive, accurate and inspire confidence. Their pricing is very competitive.
