I would not see it as my job to pursue a challenge beyond the District level. I
would see it as my job to make sure that the district had a written and approved
collection development policy. I would see it as my job to work within the
guidelines of that collection development policy and purchase quality materials
with a recognition that not all of the materials I purchased would be appropriate
for every one of my students, but that it was essential to have a wide enough
selection of materials so that I was serving every single one of those students.
I would not err on the side of caution. When there was a challenge I would let it
run its course and then let it go.
It would certainly be risking one's job to operate with no written and approved
collection development policy. I have learned enough that, when I graduate in May,
I don't intend to become employed in that sort of risky business.
