I just finished the Higher Power of Lucky last night. I enjoyed some of the
descriptive language of Lucky-- her "meanness glands" etc., but was underwhelmed
overall with the book. There was nothing in it that really moved me. (I do have
to mention that I read Edward Tulane to 9 classes, was moved each time I read it
and each class spontaneously burst into applause at the ending.)
Since Lucky came in the Junior Library Guild selection, I'm going to put it out,
but I'll type a note for the front of it that says some may object to mention of
specific body parts, and if it offends them, put the book back on the shelf. I
have found that by putting a "disclaimer" in the front of books letting students
and their parents know that I know there might be objections to a particular
something in the book they don't feel like they have to come tell me or make a
fuss. I've given them a choice.
Usually I'm able to explain why the author uses words, descriptions, etc. in such a
way, but I can't in this one.
That's my 2 cents.
