Hello everyone!
I am in need of some serious advice. This is my first school year as a library
media specialist. I convinced my principal before I started that school libraries
that operate on a flexible schedule are open for collaboration and have higher
achieving students. The school previously operated on a strict schedule with the
language arts classes coming every two weeks to visit the library.
Initially many of the language arts teachers were excited about the change because
they felt that they could schedule time whenever they wanted and didn't have to
waste valuable classroom time visiting the library when it wasn't necessary. What
has happened though is that only two of the language arts teachers are now using
the library.
My principal has mentioned to my mentoring teacher that "no one is ever in the
library." I am very busy in the morning when the students are coming in to check
out books and I have had a music teacher bring her class into do research, but
overall I definitely do not have the level of collaboration going on that I would
like. I have sent a candy-gram out to the teachers at the beginning of school year
with details about the services that I can provide. How else can I reach out to the
teachers? About half of the teachers are new (worked less than 2 years in the
district)...seven of them are first year teachers like me. The teachers that have
been there for a while really loved the retired librarian.
I would appreciate any suggestions you have. I am afraid that my principal is going
to come to me and say that we need to be on a fixed schedule since no one is using
the library. Help me!
Thanks.
