Our 5th graders are studying a facsimile of the Constitution, and
several asked me why the first "s" in the word "Congress" at the top of
the document is written as a large script "f." (The heading appears to
read "Congrefs of the United States." This "f" in place of an "s"
something that I have seen often in books and documents from the 17th
and 18th centuries but never understood.
Of course, the next question from the kids was why the first "s" and
final "s" in the word "states" are not written as an "f." I had no
answer. Why an "f" for an "s" in one word but not in others??
I will spend some time online at home this evening, trying to find the
answer to this quirky f-for-an-s question. If any of you fellow
LM_NETTERS already know the answer, I'd appreciate hearing from you!
