Hello All:
I'm in a new, small district which covers 3 schools (K-4, 5-8, 9-12). The
last media specialist managed the HS allowing the media techs to manage the
other two Media Centers. After I looked for books by a very famous author
today at the elementary Media Center and found only two, I discoverd that
the majority of the books are shelved by their AR Level in another area of
the Media Center. The non-AR books are shelved by their dewey # or author's
last name - which never get checked out. I was shocked to say the least.
Now, I'm struggling with what to do. Do I make the Elementary Media Center
'right' which will tick off a lot of teachers from what I've learned
(reminder - I'm new), or do I buy some time to earn their trust and respect
and catch the kids in the 5th at the middle school to teach them how to
locate resources?
In this situation, I couldn't help to think of the adage...give them a fish,
and feed them for a day; teach them to fish, feed them for a lifetime.
What would you do?
