I would like to ask if any elementary school librarian has a library they or
their patrons consider "World Class". I have recently been hired at a
"School of Failure"-I HATE that phrase, but that is how the school was
described to me (not by the principal) when I was hired. There is a new
principal, vice-principal, and many other staff members who are charged with
making this school a "State Model of Success" by 2010. It is very exciting
to be here, and I want to do everything I can to make the library "World
Class" as I have been charged. My new principal believes the Media Center
should be the "heart of the school" and that is the kind of library I would
like to visit and observe operations. I'm sure this is a library like I
learned about in Library Science classes and Information Power, but have not
seen a concrete example of its operation.
The school I am in has around 500 students, plenty of resource assistance,
and one Media Assistant so that would be the ideal size. The library was put
on a fixed schedule this year to give teachers release time to attend the
TAP (Teacher Achievement Program) sessions they need during the school day,
but has had a flex or combined flex-fixed schedule in the past so returning
to that is not out of the realm of possibility.
I have been given permission to go wherever I need to go, but within driving
distance of Western North Carolina or Upstate South Carolina would be best.
It is so refreshing to be given this challenge after being in a small school
with no budget and the library located in the catacombs as heard it called,
tucked far away from most of the rest of the school.
I know it is hard to brag upon yourselves at times, but if you have this
kind of library, you know what kind of program I am talking about. Please
contact me off site.
Thanks so much for your willingness to put yourselves out there for me.
