Summer Reading Road Trip
This summer you can plot your way to a virtual vacation to Disneyland and earn some
really great prizes by reading and doing fun bonus activities:
For each minute you read you will get one mile. So, for example, if you read 15
minutes, that would give you 15 miles. You can also do one bonus every two weeks
for 100 additional miles, for a total of five bonuses. You may not repeat a bonus.
Bonus options are listed on the back of this page.
To reach the top level, you need to read about 100 minutes a week plus complete
bonuses (or, if you don't want to do the bonuses, just read more). You will get a
prize for each level you reach.
You must complete the Mileage Chart and a short plot summary for each book you read.
Prize levels
Level 1: Gresham to Crater Lake National Park (250* miles = 250 minutes or 150
minutes + 1 bonus)
Level 2: Crater Lake NP to Eureka, CA (500 miles = 500 minutes or 300 minutes + 2
bonuses)
Level 3: Eureka to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (do some surfing at the
beach) (750 miles = 750 minutes or 450 minutes + 3 bonuses)
Level 4: Golden Gate Bridge to East Entrance of Yosemite National Park (1000 miles
= 1000 minutes or 600 minutes + 4 bonuses)
Level 5: Yosemite to Monterey, CA (1250 miles = 1250 minutes or 750 minutes + 5
bonuses)
Level 6: Monterey to Disneyland (1500 miles = 1500 minutes or 1000 minutes + 5
bonuses)
*our mileages are approximate, not exactly 250 for each level, but close enough for
our game

Bonuses
You may complete one bonus every two weeks for a maximum of five.
Each bonus is worth 100 miles, so you can get up to 500 bonus miles.
1. Visit a state or National Park
2. Go a major or minor league baseball game.
3. Attend a musical or dramatic production (play or concert)
3. Visit a zoo or museum in another city.
4. Read a book about a subject you studied in school during the 2006-07 school
year.
5. Read to a younger child for a total of 2 hours (attach a list of the times and
dates).
6. Exercise for a total of two hours (attach a list of the times and dates).
7. Photo of yourself on a road trip with a book!
8. Bonus for each new genre you read
9. Read a new author you've never read
10. Read a book about a place you've never been to
11. Visit a water park or theme park
12. Visit the beach
13. Go to camp or clinic
14. Do volunteer work
15. Mow the lawn (without being asked)
16. Do a journal share reading project with a parent where you both read the same
book and journal back and forth about it a minimum of 7 times. (200 miles for this
one!)
17. Ride a horse
18. Try a new activity
19. Go to a sporting event
20. Check out a book from the public library and read it.
21. Participate in Multnomah County's summer reading program (go to
multcolib.org/summer for details or stop by the public library)
22. Listen to an audio book (double your bonus if you follow along with the
reading)
23. Read aloud to your pet or stuffed animal for a total of two hours (attach a
list of the times and dates)
24. Read news articles for a total of two hours (attach a list of the times and
dates).
25. Read aloud to a parent or other adult for a total of two hours (attach a
list of the times and dates).
26. Look up a website on a destination level and write down three facts from the
webpage
27. Go swimming
28. Hike one of Oregon's beautiful trails
29. Learn a new skill (like changing the oil in the car or cooking - with parent
supervision!)
30. Cook a meal from a different culture
31. Read a book about one of the places on our trip or a biography of Walt
Disney.
32. Plot your own mileage out to get to a different destination that you can
reach in approximately 1500 miles with six stops.
