I am reading up on the use of chapter books in
Kindergarten. I have known for years that students can
listen several grade levels above their reading level. I
recently found that Jim Trelease said that it is better
for a Kindergarten teacher to read 100 picture books and
10-12 chapter books each year versus just reading 150
picture books (the benefits are improved vocabulary,
attention span and more complex thinking.) My question is,
are there chapter books that are recommended or more
beneficial than others. Needless to say, I cannot read
chapter books to a class that I just see once a week (not
at this grade level, anyway.) I do use several sets of
short chapter books in the upper grades and both my
students and I enjoy doing this as a change of pace.)
Our Kindergarten teacher was reading the book, Afternoon
on the Amazon, to her class, which brought this issue to
my attention. Would that be a good choice, considering the
fact that the class is studying the Amazon?
Thanks,
