The first chapter of St. John's novel draws the reader in due to its
strange and exotic location, the appearance of a grandmother that
Martine has never known existed, the mystery of her grandfather's
death/murder and the African legend of a child who can ride a white
giraffe and lead all animals. Martine is mystified by the appearance of
the white giraffe at midnight and sneaks onto the wild game preserve in
search of it. What Martine finds in the giraffe's secret dwelling place
will surprise most readers.
Although the cover and the title of the novel are not what will draw
kids to this book, the cover notes should. Kids who love geography,
animals, wildlife, or conservation will love this book.
