[LM_NET] Freshman read

Hi!
I'm working with our 9th grade English teacher to find a required summer read for 
incoming Freshmen.  He is looking for something within the time span of "The 
Beginning of time to 1750'.  During the school year they read Eaters of the Dead 
and Understanding Islam and a few others.  Last summer he requested that they read 
Siddhartha and only 5 out of 85 read it.  

Can anyone think of something enticing that would be a better seller?

We are also planning to do a free reading assigment of some sort.
