During the last 10 days, I was called on by teachers in two different
school districts to provide the following information:
1) Recommend science-related (but not science fiction) books for a 5th
grade teacher to include on his website and recommend to parents.
2) Recommend good high/low publishers for a teacher who had to place a
$3500 order in the next 48 hours.
3) Instruct teachers in the use of wikis and blogs in education (for
which I was actually paid).
Are school librarians obsolete? No, obviously we aren't. These people
had distinct needs for school librarians. It's just that their
districts don't *hire* school librarians, because they are not required
in Colorado. Instead, they asked for help from me, a parent volunteer,
because they know I'm a librarian. Their school principal recommends my
services because as she puts it, I can find anything. They need
librarians, but we cost money and seem expendable. That's why I'm
working on my certification as an ESL teacher instead.
I blog about this once in awhile (mine is a hodgepodge blog, so you may
not find it that interesting, but you can check it out at
http://onlycrook.wordpress.com/--if you only care about library stuff,
you can look under that tag for my library-related postings).
