Read an interesting story about Lynne Rae Perkins, Newbery winner, in the
Houston paper over the weekend.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life/4155615.html
from the article:
Perkins sees things in a way the rest of us don't. She likes it that way.
"If everybody starts seeing the same things I do, then nobody would see
anything interesting in what I do," the author/illustrator says with a
smile.
A Perkins novel for teens, Criss Cross, won the 2006 Newbery Medal, awarded
to the year's best book for children. The book is honest and funny and
quirky. Like Perkins.
The book startled and charmed critics, in part because of the odd stuff
Perkins included.
You're reading along about a teen named Debbie and her friends as they
navigate confounding teen life, and suddenly there's a bit of haiku. Or song
lyrics. Or the text shifts to a question-and-answer session.
Perkins tossed in little drawings and photographs to illustrate her points,
goofy little things such as a buffalo wearing glasses or a comb jumping out
of a kid's back pocket. She rigged that photo herself with a comb, some wire
and her husband's pocket...........article continues..........
