Thanks to all of you who responded to my question of
where to find books out of print. Here's the hit that
was requested....
I have used Amazon in the past, which of course is
many different vendors. The only issue is that I can't
use my corporate account, so have to put it on my
credit card and get paid back by school. That's not an
issue, just a time lapse.
I'm not an "official" librarian yet, so I don't know
any vendors.
However, as a compulsive used book buyer, I can say
that I really like the following used book sellers:
www.bookfinder.com
www.alibris.com
www.powells.com
I like Bookfinder because the results are ranked by
price, and the
results are from many different bookstores throughout
the country. I like Alibris because they have great
service. I like Powell's because you can place an
"order" for an out-of-print book and they'll search
for you.
I've found used books on Amazon a very reliable
source. Actually I've ordered quite a few and never
had a problem - only once when they didn't have the
book.
I use www.abebooks.com all the time. They had
something like 12,000 member bookstores and 70 million
listings when last I checked.
I know that Amazon offers similar service, and
Alibris. What I like about ABE is that it started
with sellers who list antiquarian books, and so the
sellers generally know their books, and are quite
precise about book condition. There are mass-volume
folks noticing ABE and listing there now, but you can
usually spot them from the tenor (and detail) of the
listings.
I also love the fact that I can go from the book
listing to the bookseller's website (often, though not
always), get a phone number, and end up talking to a
small bookseller who knows their trade. With Alibris
and Amazon, it's difficult or impossible to talk
directly to a real person.
I used half.com to purchase a copy of Moon Bear by F.
Asch which is out of print.
I use amazon.com. I've located many books through
their associated used-book sellers.
www.alibris.com is the best online resource, also -
Borders can special order any out of print books for
you also and will have them delivered to their store
that is local to you - that way you don't have to pay
shipping and handling.
Do you have a local used book store? That's where I
went and found a ton of out of print books, and got
good deals on them, too!
Again....thanks to all of you who responded.
