The worst: Last Spring I organized POEM IN YOUR POCKET day. Formed a
committee with teachers from all grades (K-5). The sweet idea is that everyone
writes or copies a small poem and has it in their pocket Made special badges for
teachers and students to wear that said "Read me your poem". Made them on
yellow paper and safety pins. It came back to me that a notoriously mean teacher
told other teachers that the badges looked like the ones the Nazis forced
the Jews to wear. It still hurts that anyone, ANYONE!, would say something
like that.
The best: Every time I put a book into the hands of a waiting reader, and it
is the perfect book for that child at that moment, they make a certain sound
of satisfaction... something like OH! but more guttural. I love that sound.
Thanks for letting me share (and vent).
