My original post:
Can you suggest books that will appeal to 8th grade girls like Twilight by
Stephenie Meyer?
Thanks for all of the suggestions! Someone requested I post a hit. Here it
is!
Books by Annette Curtis Klause (Blood and Chocolate; Silver Kiss
R.L Stine (Dangerous Girls; Taste of night)
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes (Demon in my view; Midnight predator)
Blood is Like Chocolate
Sweet Blood
Vampire Kisses
How about Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schriber,
Uglies Trilogy by Westerfeld
Corral and Just Listen by Sarah Dessen (these are all works written for the
same audience).
Bluebloods
Amelia Atwater Rhodes' series
Darren Shan series
It's not a vampire book, but "A Northern Light" by Jennifer Donnelly is also
an excellent book for girls, where the main character also has some
important choices to make about whether to change her dreams to accommodate
the man she thinks she loves. It's also got a mystery aspect to it.
By the way, I loved Twilight and so do the teachers in my school who have
read it, and of course the girls who read it all love it. But several female
teachers in my school who read the book feel it sends bad message to girls
because Bella is ready to give up everything else in her life to become a
vampire and stay with Edward forever. It's been interesting hearing their
discussions about the book.
The sequel, "New Moon," is out, and the girls are lining up like crazy to
read it. I haven't gone to Stephanie Meyers' website to check it out myself,
but another teacher-librarian told me that she has chapters of Twilight on
it, written from Edward's point of view.
Van Velde's, Companions of the Night
Valiant and Tithe by Holly Black
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes (In the Forests of the Night; Demon in
my View)
The Bridesmaid by Hailey Abbott It’s about two sisters who vow never
to become Bridezillas like the ones they see come through their family
business each day. The older sister decides to get married and chaos
ensues! It’s a light and funny read that they will enjoy.
Peter and the Starcatchers by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry
This is basically the prequel to Peter Pan. It delves into the
story of how Peter became Peter Pan, how Never Land came to be, and many
more details of the fairy tale we know. This would be a great read for
girls or boys!
Peter and the Shadow Thieves by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry
This is the second in the series of how Peter Pan came about.
I have not gotten to read this one, but it has been highly recommended to me
by many who have read it.
Scott Westerfeld's Peeps (it isn't a direct love story but is about
vampires).
Only, I'm not sure if these are junior high appropriate - of course, if
they are reading Twilight, then these might be ok but suggest you
preview before recommending.
You might try Garth Nix's Abhorsen stories, Vivian Vande Velde, and Margaret
Mahy. These are all fantasy with a some romance (some more than others),
Mahy has some realistic fiction that might appeal
