One of the posters in the hit mentioned the problem with students who have
already heard or read the book. When one or more students state that they
have read the book I am ready to read aloud, I stop and question them. I
ask for a show of hands: "How many students ever ate an ice cream cone?"
Hands go up, then I say "So you're never going to eat another ice cream
cone?" I may go through several foods, or places, such as "How many of you
have been to Splash Lagoon (local indoor vast water park - big deal here in
the land of very long winters)? "So you'll never go to Splash Lagoon
again?" Then I compare a good book to a favorite food or favorite place,
etc. Even the kinders seem to get this and are ready to enjoy an encore
reading.
