Along with _Splendid Friend Indeed_ (Bloom) and _Tippy-Toe, Chick,Go_ (Shannon),
I've been reading _Terrific_ by Agee this week to my K-2 students to gain votes for
our state book award nominations.
_Terrific_ has had its fans, but today I had the most success with a group of first
graders who had recently learned the importance of punctuation. We talk before
hand about the double meaning of "terrific" - that is, it's negative meaning when
said sarcastically. Today, however, when we reached the end of the story wherethe
readers are asked to predict what Eugene says - they chimed in terrific - then
paused a for a very brief moment, then silently READ the page illustration and
text+punctuation and then corrected themselves "TERRIFIC!" Just as the author
intended, I'm sure!! What fun! Especially fun as a read aloud in conjunction with
punctuation lesson, I guess.
