I am in the process of cleaning up our records (before we send them to be REALLY
cleaned by Follett). During the process of reviewing the cataloging, I discovered
that the individuals who have been processing our books have used "indicators" in
the call number to clarify what the format of the book might be or where it might
be located.
For example, a video cassette tape would have the letters: VCT
A DVD would have: DVD
A reference book would have: REF
The problem is that those indicators are at the END of the call number--- for
example: 398.2 PER DVD
For a DVD on Cinderella.
I have been lobbying to put the indicators at the front end of the call number:
DVD 398.2 PER so that we can easily search the catalog for a complete list of
videos or DVDs by searching call numbers----- and then using DVD as the beginning.
I have always used REF, DVD, VCT at the beginning of the call number to indicate
format within the call number, but I'm meeting some resistance to this "new idea."
(I've tried showing examples of collections online, but those are usually public
libraries, so I'm having problems convincing a couple of people that it's okay to
do it in schools too....and I've pull out the books too, but alas....)
What do you do about call numbers and those indicators within them?
You may respond off-list and I'll post a HIT on the subject.
Thanks!
