Dear Librarians,
In my Target query I asked if you had read the new book: The Journey That
Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey by
Louise Borden.
I also asked who you thought was the audience for this book. Following are
the intelligent and thoughtful answers I received. Thank you so much! Isn't
LM_NET just the greatest resource in the whole wide world?
Answers:
- I bought it for my high school library. Book talked it in the US History
class. I think the format is appealing to all age levels ( I loved it!)
- I bought this book for my Middle/High school library. I have it out on
display, and many kids pick it up and read or browse through it while in here
for study hall. I think it's appropriate at all levels. I'm hoping our 8th grade
teachers will include it in their Holocaust unit - Curious George is
something all the kids are familiar with, and I hope it will make a connection
with
them.
- When I read the book, I asked myself the same questions. I felt the
perfect audience for the book was ME! It's a great book for librarians,
educators, children's lit students, but not necessarily children. The reading
level
and interest level are not a match. Yes, it was an enjoyable read for me as a
life long Curious George fan and as a lover of biographies and history. I
share some of the book's info as background when reading C.G. to primary
students. Beyond that, the book has limited appeal. I did not purchase the book
for the library this year for that reason. Hope this is helpful to you!
- We are considering it for our gifted 4th and 5th grade readers. I loved
it. short enough to not overwhelm kids with "too much information" and the
character and WWII hook for interest. It would provide many extensions of study.
- Have seen the movie--wished I had saved my money. Really
disappointed--some incidents from the book, but changed the character of the man
in the
Yellow Hat from a strong figure to a weak one and even changed Curious George.
Have the biography--The Journey....--at school we read it aloud on all levels
from 1st to 5th. The children enjoyed it and gives great background about
life issues. An interesting thought -- there was very little if any promotion
of the Curious George books or related materials at the local bookstores or
through any professional organizations. In fact the local book store, a
national chain, didn't even know about The Journey and I had to special order it.
Not much promotion to connect reading.
- I read it and love it. We have 3rd graders who do a wax museum
presentation after reading and making powerpoints on their biographical figures. I
am
going to share this book with each class and try to spark interest. It would
not be necessary to read the whole book, just the most intriguing parts. There
are so many ways they could set up their table and dress themselves, making
this a wonderful introduction to the project.
Thank you!
