Original Target: What type/brand of mylar book covers do you use? I seem to have
trouble putting
them on and getting them to look right, I need something easy. I will post a
hit.
Replies:
I always liked Demco's Polyfit Center Slit that comes on a roll
the primary ones I use are from Highsmith and I've used the 10", 11", 12", 14" and
16" sizes. These are precut to various lengths depending on the width. I learned
what these were and how to put them on years ago by our former speech teacher. I
had them in the library for several years and didn't have a clue what they were or
what to do with them. I had placed them out to throw away (at that time I never
seen anything like them and didn't even know what they were called) and she walked
by and asked what was I doing with the dust jacket protectors. She taught me what
they were and how to put them on! She had done volunteer work at a library in
Pennsylvania before moving south. I've used them since then. Sometimes they go on
better than other. The hardest part I have is getting them to fit precisely where
there is no space between the fold and the jacket. A friend at another library
sent me roll of mylar jacket protectors. The width is the same and you roll off
the length that you need. I do not like this as much. The precut protectors
enable me to push the top of the dust jacket all the way up to the top crease and
then just fold over the bottom. The protector on the roll I have to fold over on
top and bottom and I spend more time getting it to be flush on both top and bottom
edges. Other tools I use in this process besides a good pair of scissors to trip
off the excess protector are fiber-tape that I use to hold the jacket to the book
and place on each folded corner. The other tool I use is called a "bone folder" in
the Highsmith catalog, but since I live in Georgia I refer to it as the "hambone!"
I have a plastic one and one made out of bone. The plastic one tends to streak
sometimes on the mylar, but the bone one works much better.
Gaylord's and the kind that comes in a long roll in various heights; more
economical too. The secret is very sharp creases at your folds; use a ruler edge
or there is even a specific tool to male the bottom and side creases sharp. be
sure to get the kind that is clear and NOT non-reflective. And I get the majority
of my books from jobbers (well, Follett, mostly) and they Mylar for me for a
nominal fee as part of overall processing.
I get mine from Demco. I use the paper-backed ones. I use them for the paper
covers that come with books. I've never used any on books alone, but would like
to know how!
We buy ours from Brodart, who was the first company to provide them to the
library community. We have been very pleased with them. I cannot tell you
which ones we use because I'm not at school, but they have a large variety.
I just got a roll of the Econo-fold adjustable mylar covers from Brodart.
It's 2 mil and looks good. I was worried about not having a paper backing,
but it sure is fast and easy to use. Getting a roll allows you to cut it to
size.

I ended up ordering from Brodart, a selection of several different sizes, Just a
Fold with tabs.
Thanks to all of you who sent a reply.
