I've tried many ways of keeping and using laminated index cards with student 
barcodes.  My final solution has been a jewelry holder purchased for about $12 at 
Linens 'n' Things.  It's like a hanging shoebag, with clear pockets that are just 
the right size for a class-ful of index cards.  I have it tied to one end of the 
shelving cart that sits next to the circ. desk.  I believe it is 2-sided, but I can 
fit all the K-3 classes on one side.
