Another important element is to have administrative support. Nothing happens
successfully or thoroughly if it doesn't start from the top-down. You may be
walking on water in the library, doing things for everyone, trying to make it
happen for students, teachers and parents, but if the administration does not
support the library program, the efforts you make to provide instruction and
library awareness, or promote the library's services and your talents and abilities
to assist the teachers, the students, the parents, and the community members
(including the school board), it will be one of the hardest parts of process.
Being "the hub" must involve the administration understanding how the entire
educational program revolves around the library's services, support, and
programs...it must be something that they can visualize, realize, and actually
witness. Over time, being "the hub" should become the catch-phrase that the
administration uses to illustrate the importance of the library program to the
overall educational program. Those administrators who not only use the term (the
hub) to describe the library but also illustrate the importance of the library to
others, are the ones who understand libraries and promote them with others within
and outside of the school.
This doesn't mean you can't "win over" the administration...it just means that you
will spend more time re-educating them in what a library can do for everyone. Once
you've educated the administration and have gained their support, the rest of the
process can come much easier because you've created an alliance with the elements
that have power over the rest of the machinery.
