[LM_NET] GEN: OT Buying PC

First I am a Mac person so when asked by my 
granddaughter's mother about what PC laptop would 
be great for my granddaughter -- I don't have the 
answer.

She is a high school student with the usual HS 
interests.  Her mom is putting a wireless network 
in the house just so her daughter can have a 
computer in the lower level for her homework (yea 
right!)  But we need a computer with enough power 
to use the MS Office suite, have wireless 
capability, and be durable.  I'm thinking at 
least 512 and must be able to burn CDs (and maybe 
DVDs).

And what is the difference between:
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
and Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional

Should I care about which operating system they should get?

Does anyone have any recommendations - -and if so 
can you point me to a WWW address where I can 
check specs and prices.  Dell, HP, is Gateway 
still in business???
