Here's a thought: let the kids (in all grades) check out as many books
as they want. I did this in previous grades K-4 school, and while I had
to shelve more returned books, there was no increase in loss or damage
rate, and the kids just loved it. Asking a 5-6 year old to be happy
with one book a week is hard - they go home, read the book that night,
and then what do they have for the rest of the week? Let them have
piles of books!
