[LM_NET] HIT: Labeling CDs

Thanks to all who responded.  Here is the HIT:

With a permanent sharpie marker, I write the barcode number and brief  
ownership info on the labeled side of the disk. I wouldn't put a  
barcode on that surface because it may make the disc spin  wobbly.   
If someone wanted to , they could peel off a barcode, but i think  
trying to erase the marker would damage the CD.

I am looking at purchasing audio CDs for my library this year and I borrowed 
several from the public library to see how they handled labeling.  I found that 
they had bright orange stickers (1" by about 1/2") on tor in the case that told how 
many CDs were supposed to be in the case, or gave other information about missing 
items, etc.  They also wrote the accession number on the CD around the middle hole 
with a Sharpie marker.  They only cataloged the entire set.  In their online 
catalog they made note of how many CDs and/or other "stuff" that is in the case.  I 
found looking at the public library a great help.

I have a property statement sticker that I print on address labels.  One of these 
goes in each book, and I stick one right on the CD.  I usually have to trim it up a 
little to get it to fit neatly on the CD.  I've never had any trouble with doing 
that.  I worried that it would peel off in the various CD players, but none ever 
has. I've been labeling CDs like this for about 5 years.

We mark ours with an indelible black marker-the call number and the abbreviation 
for our school. We also affix the small number label that corresponds to the 
barcode. Hope this helps.

Sharpie Markers work great on the  non-laser side of CD's or on the plastic circle 
insert.  We write the Disc number on each in the set  1 of 5 for example  as well 
as the barcode of the set on each disc. Our school name is also included as other 
schools sometomes borrow materials. Individual discs do get lost or damaged or 
misplaced, so labeling definitely helps!

For our CD's we buy a roll of labels that are round and have a hole in 
the center.  They fit right around the hole in the middle of the CD.  
They are not very big, but we can write our school initials and the 
barcode number on them.  I think they are from DEMCO.

Please be  careful when labeling CDs. You need to use a marker that has ink
that is for CDs. Some markers will actually damage the CD. Also, labels can
be a problem- they can come off or make CD unblanced - or etch them.
Safest: a marker that is made for CDs - it will say so on the package.
