I agree with Brenda recommendation that accommodation be made for a
person's belief.   Putting a marker on the shelf is a simple and
effective solution.

My first impulse was to  think I needed to verify  the patron's
statement, but I am not sure I would even do that.   If the same person
reappeared with additional requests I would probably start checking at
that point.
