I guess my question might be, "if a student lost a textbook, would your =
administrator expect the student to purchase the textbook or pay for a =
replacement copy?" =20
=20
I think this can "go on" for only so long before you have a situation =
where "there are no more textbooks....everyone's lost theirs and we =
don't have any funding to purchase new ones to replace them." So goes =
the same for the library---how can you possibly develop a library =
collection for use by students and teachers if no one is held =
responsible for the materials that they destroy or lose?
=20
The responsibility lies on the administration to make sure that this =
doesn't become a major problem, but if students aren't held responsible =
for their library books, textbooks, or other school equipment, then =
someone must be held accountable. Asking for replacement costs of lost =
books (textbooks, library books, etc.) is something that students will =
have to deal with if they borrow from the public libraries, go on to =
college, or even borrow from personal friends. =20
=20
We do charge for lost textbooks, library books, etc. In the library the =
cost is the actual replacement cost plus processing. If a book has no =
cost listed (on our catalog), we charge a basic fee of $25 for a =
hardback and $15 for a paperback--unless we can determine that the item =
is so old that we probably won't replace it or can't find a replacement =
copy. In that case, we still charge a basic fee based upon the age of =
the book, type of book (hardback or paperback) and probable condition =
(we usually remember some of these older books when they "finally go =
out.") Normally, I try not to "stick it" to the student, but I will =
charge $10 for most older books that are lost.
=20
If a student does not return a book, we label it "lost" for at least a =
year before we delete the record (and move the information to a =
"re-purchase this item file"--for later purchasing). In the meantime, =
the student will not receive his or her report card / transcript until =
the fees for the replacement copy have been paid through the =
administrative offices. (The office then forwards the information to me =
and I "release" their information back to the offices so that the =
student can receive their report cards / transcripts.)
=20
This will be the reality of college for many of our students---clear =
everything up with the university library (fines, lost items, etc.) or =
you can't enroll in the next semester's courses! (Here, we're just =
practicing early!)

Subject: Advice needed--no late fines in MS

Hi everyone! I have a new administrator who does not want me to charge
late fines any more. She asked me to check with other LMTs about what
you do at you're school. If you don't charge late fines, how long do you
give them before you change the book to "lost?" Do you have any
non-monetary consequences for not returning the books (e.g.--detention)?
Any other words of wisdom?
Thank you,
