Weed of the Month Sept 2004

The Weed of the Month topic for September is Democracy.

As the political rhetoric continues to heat up in the next couple of months,
students may be wondering and/or worrying if all is well. This is a good
time to explain "democracy" (rule of the people) and the freedoms that we
cherish that allow for spirited debates, free elections, and final
decisions. For students who go directly to the shelves for an explanation
(good for them!), make sure you have removed any outdated titles and
replaced or have plans to replace with current and forthcoming titles.

SUNLINK'S Weed of the Month pages were inspired by a message to lm_net from
Mike Eisenberg lamenting the poor state of library collections on the topic
of Space and Astronomy. That was in 1997. Since then the SUNLINK Staff has
worked to identify titles which should be examined for possible weeding, and
has provided titles to evaluate for purchase consideration.

All topics give a rationale, Dewey numbers to examine, and specific criteria
for weeding that topic. Archives of all topics back to 1997 are provided on
our site, linked below. (Please realize that archived topics will not list
the most recent titles for purchase consideration.)
