Last year a 6th grader brought me one of the Madeline L'Engle books and said
she couldn't read it. I replied that was ok; she could choose another.
Her response: "Mrs. Hawkins, do you know this book has a bad word in it?"
me: "Oh, really? What bad word?"
student: "The "s" word."
me: "Are you sure?" (I'm thinking: I don't think L'Engle ever used the
word sh-t...)
student: "I'll show you..."
She turned to a page in which a 14 or so year old girl is contemplating that
she's certainly not old enough to even be thinking about sex...."
