Book Dust Jackets reasons to remove / leave on

When I was working on my Masters I did a research project on book binding
vs. cost.  My conclusion was that cost per circulation was almost identical
for hard back and paperback books.  The only factor that improved the cost
per circulation was book jackets.  They do help protect books.

I order most of my books with mylar jackets unattached.  It lets me make
additions or changes, allows me to send back titles I don't want, and save
tons of time.
