I have gotten a number of questions about why I take the covers off--

When I had the grade school I did it because:
1. They got torn and abused being pulled in and out of book bags, backpacks,
etc.
2. Students liked to take them off to see " what the book really looks like"
3. I only had to do one set of spine labels -after all if someone removes
the dust jacket, you still need a spine label on the book
4. They provided me with an inexpensive way to do displays since I had
almost no budget for display materials

I do it now in the high school because:
1. My high schoolers don't care if they are on
2. Dust jackets get really torn up in the lockers, back packs, book bags...
3. I use them in displays and the real books can still be checked out
without removing part of the display
4. They provide me with inexpensive display materials
5. I don't have to print out two spine labels and barcodes

I know they protect books and provide colorful and eye-catching
illustrations, but they are too much extra work in processing and I have
other uses for them. I haven't had to repair books - but book covers
attached to books were getting to be a real time consuming process. Plus if
I covered them, that was another expense.

What is the reason for not leaving them on the books? They protect the
book and help prolong it's attractiveness. Why would you take them off?
