A couple of good sites to use to teach evaluation:
Point Of View: http://www.bseinfo.org/
I found this to be an interesting, timely website to use for an eighth grade
website evaluation refresher course. It concerns mad cow disease. (check out
the authors behind this site - tho I must say they are upfront in identifying
themselves at the bottom of the page.)
You can pair this site with any authoritative site which gives a more
even-handed view of the mad cow problem. I used an article from Consumer
Reports, but I am sure there are many other sites you could use as a comparison.
Spoofs : Burger King Lefthanded Whopper
Another guaranteed to interest kids site is a 1998 press release from Burger
King which touts the upcoming introduction of the left-handed Whopper. Go to
http://www.Burgerking.com, then company info, press releases, 1998, March 31.
I had lots of fun with this one. I had mentioned site-napping earlier, so the
kids were sure it was a fake burger king site. When I assured them it was not, it
took some time, but eventually some careful reader came up with the reason that
Burger King came out with this press release. The clue, of course, is the date.
