In the Australian system of teacher education, student teachers spend an
ever-increasing block of time in classrooms on 'prac' working up to an
10-week internship in their 4th year - or a variation thereof depending on
the state or institution. They cannot graduate without having successfully
completed this and, generally, you cannot be employed as a teacher in
Australian schools without this component of supervised prac in your
degrees. (Of course there are exceptions and each state ed department has a
qualifications officer who deals with the tricky stuff.)

Do you have a similar system in the US? If you do would it be possible to
talk to the institutions and see if some library experience (collaborative
planning and teaching of a unit, for instance) could become a mandatory part
of that prac? It might go some way towards addressing the issue of
pre-service teachers not having a schmick and so the war of advocacy is
perpetuated.

I have to admit that I have been lobbying for this for ages here but have
not got anywhere - some student teachers come and go without even having set
foot in the RC. And because I teach the class while their associate
teachers plan with them and their teams, they don't even come with the
class.

Somewhere amongst all the suggestions there has to be a solution or three
that we could work on.
