Thanks so much to everyone who wrote or posted to help me out of the
doldrums from my WHINE. Thanks to the lift you gave me, I got back to =
work
on things I could do and starting taking satisfaction in them.=20

And then the most wonderful thing happened: My BookSplash program =
suddenly
took off like it had wings (I guess fins would be more appropriate). I
changed my methods like several of you suggested and went to an English
teacher for help. She brought her classes in to check out books from my
featured collection, and they will receive extra credit for completing =
the
reading and attached assignment. Some of the featured books were the 35
titles nominated for the YALSA Teen Top Ten Picks, so students will get =
to
participate in that process. I promised the remaining students that =
their
ratings and reviews would be used at our school in recommending books to
other students (I may also use them on my Port Libraria web site, but =
that's
down the road a bit yet). I was thrilled with how enthusiastic the =
students
were. They finally got to see that I've bought some fun, interesting and
up-to-date fiction for the library.=20

And it went so well with Teacher J's classes that I went to Teacher C =
and
invited her to participate too. Not only did she bring the two ninth =
grade
classes I suggested she bring-she also brought in her juniors (which was
great). I may risk going to one more teacher on Monday because there are
still a lot of great books that haven't been checked out, including some =
of
the YALSA nominees.

One person asked what BookSplash is. It's my personally designed reading
promotion for my school. My initial ideas are available at
http://dogw.tripod.com/port_libraria/ and will eventually be moved to
http://www.debwaugh.com/port_libraria/. I hope to update the information
soon with what has and hasn't worked at my school, the rating and review
forms the students are using, and so on. Feel free to borrow any ideas,
graphics, etc. from the site.

Thanks again everyone!
