I feel like I should be writing to Dear Abby or Anne Landers, but you =
folks will understand my problem better. I have a situation in my media =
center and I need some suggestions for handling it. In this school, =
I've had 3 clerks, and each one was better than the one before. Last =
spring, my long-time media clerk retired because of a health issue. My =
principal interviewed all applicants, and then send me her selections. I =
interviewed 3 people, and chose the one who I thought would be best. It =
is not working out. She was there for the final 8 weeks of school, and =
I thought the reasons for our problems were based on the huge shoes she =
was trying to fill. That was not the case.
So far this year, we've been in school for 5 weeks. The situation is =
worse. She is very uncooperative with me. She wants to do only the =
clerical duties. We are responsible for all AV in the school, =
technology, the web page, the electronic bulletin board, the morning =
news program, teaching classes all day every day, and maintaining a =
weekly "store" for our reading program rewards. When I ask her to do =
something else, she tells me she is not comfortable with it. =20
She is very good clerically. She is very organized and neat, a feature =
which is my weakness. She is good with the children and the teachers. =
She stays until a job is finished, not worrying about the time after =
school. She is often argumentative with me. And it's the little things =
that drive me crazy. She refuses to have a pencil on the counter for =
quick use. Pencils stay in the drawer. She refuses to have a pair of =
scissors behind the counter. They are in a drawer. She moved all my =
phone lists and I have to search for them. (They'd been in the same =
place for years -- just updated several times a year.)
Am I being petty? Am I being childish? Should I talk to my =
administrator about the situation. I am not enjoying this school year =
at all.
