I was out of school and the area when this subject came up. I've read the postings
and had to put in my opinion.
No, my media center does not have Goosebumps. I understand the reasons for having
them, but I cannot add them to our collection for other reasons. Those reasons
include
1. They are on the way out. Why put something old in your media center. Also, as
is the case with so many fads, younger students are interested in the stuff that
held the interest of older students. When Pokemon cards lost favor with the 10+
age group, first graders and kindergarteners began to be interested. There is no
way I would give a Goosebumps book to a kindergartener, even if he/she could read
it.
2. It has always been my belief that we should offer the "best". You certainly
wouldn't put a mediocre book with questionable facts in nonfiction; why would you
place a mediocre title in fiction. There are so many other choices out there.
3. Although this is not true at many schools, at my school students buy this type
of book from the class book club. Most have access to these books. Fewer have
access to really good literature. I "sell" good literature by carefully selecting
books for all students and becoming familiar with the books and the students.
Just my 2 cents.
