Thanks for the suggestions. Here are some books that have been recommended -
Check into some of Margaret Haddix Peterson's books, esp. the Shadow Children
series, Escape From Memory, and Turnabout.
City of Ember byJeanne DuPrau was a big hit this year with our 7th graders. It is
similar to Lowry's The Giver in theme & tone. For a humorous selection, Surviving
the Applewhites also was popular.
Money hungry by Sharon Flake, Forged by fire by Sharon Draper (deals with sexual
abuse), and Things not seen
by Andrew Clements.
Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mickaelson
(it's even better than Red Midnight!)
Pictures of Hollis Wood by Patricia Reilly Gif
City of Ember by Jean DuPrau
Thief Lord by Cornelia (can't remember last name) --
this is a long book, but I'm currently reading it
aloud to my homeroom and kids can't wait to hear it
every morning!
Zach's Lie by Roland Smith
Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde
Hoot by Carl Hiassen
Goblin Wood by Hilari Bell
Thanks.
