When I was in this situation without any clerical assistance and I was
the only person assigned to work in the library I wrote a handbook for
substitutes in the library. I gave them a copy of the library rules, I
told them how to handle the mail, I listed the steps in starting the
computer and using it for circulation, etc. The substitutes really
appreciated it and commented that they really found it helpful. I kept
this information in a place so that the school secretary could find it
and give it to the substitutes. If I knew ahead of time that I would be
out of school I would place this guide on my desk.
