I am an elementary school librarian whose library will be fully automated
in the fall. I work alone, with no clerical help or volunteers. As I am
a prep period, a sub is always obtained for me when I am absent. My
question is: What do you do about returning books or signing them out?
Do you just have the sub teach a lesson or read a story with quiet reading
time? Are all the books left there for you to check in the next day or do
you have the students hold on to them until you return? If no new books
are signed out, are there complaints from parents or teachers? I don't
think the district would be willing to train the subs on how to use the
system and I'm sure I wouldn't be too comfortable with it either. The
chances of training one sub to do this might be possible, but coverage by
the same person isn't always guaranteed. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
I posted this last week, but it came out garbled, so I'm trying again.
